Enterprise XR · Production, training, and simulation
2016 · Enterprise client work
At GreyKernel, I led technology across immersive client projects, including JPMorgan Chase’s Mumbai lab for onboarding and training, Anglian Water training software, and VR empathy exercises in Singapore.

Different jobs called for different kinds of XR.
- For
- Learners and instructors, as well as people exploring a location remotely.
- Outcome
- We delivered 360-degree productions and interactive training applications. The work ranged from filming real locations to simulating procedures and everyday situations.
Explore a location remotely or practise a task in a simulated setting.
- My contribution
- As GreyKernel’s co-founder and CTO, I worked on product definition and application architecture, led technical delivery, and coordinated the work with production teams and domain specialists.
How it works.
- System
- Some projects used filmed 360-degree environments with navigation. Others needed real-time simulations, guided tasks, and instructor controls. The software depended on what the participant was there to do.
- Key decisions
- Choose filming or simulation according to the task. Showing a real location calls for a different approach from letting someone practise a procedure.
- Structure the Cycling Without Age exercises around familiar situations, so participants can consider the difficulties an older person may encounter.
- Keep the instructor’s role visible in training applications, with a clear path through the material and controls appropriate to the session.
- Constraints
- Training software has to reflect the procedure being taught. Its interactions and terminology need input from people who know that work.

Notes from the project.
- JPMorgan Chase’s Mumbai lab brought several learning experiences into one office setting; other engagements involved multi-module training applications and location tours.
For JPMorgan Chase, we helped set up an immersive lab in its Mumbai office. The lab included gamified onboarding, cybersecurity and social-engineering experiences, and training applications.
For Anglian Water, we worked on a multi-module training application covering vehicle inspections, safe driving, and safe digging. The content and interactions had to suit the procedures being taught.
Cycling Without Age Singapore used VR exercises to help younger participants understand some of the difficulties older people face. The scenarios covered a living room, a street crossing, and a supermarket. They gave the learning experience a familiar setting and a basis for discussion afterwards.
Other work included maritime training for ships and lifeboats in 2021, and a Tata Safari technical-learning system with component overviews, service procedures, documentation, and an instructor mode. We also worked on the Voxel Worlds Apple release pipeline. In each case, my role was to help turn the client’s material and requirements into an application the intended audience could use.
