At GreyKernel, we built IRA VR for immersive classroom learning. I led product and technology across the learner applications and the tools teachers used to run sessions.

How it works.

System
Teachers could select localised lessons, coordinate sessions, and review assessments. The content covered science and geography. Newton and the virtual lab explored conversational learning and hands-on experiments, including assembling a circuit.
Key decisions
  • Give teachers control over the session and access to assessment reports, alongside the learner’s headset experience.
  • Support localised content and a submission-and-review process so the lesson library could grow without handing classroom control to content contributors.
Constraints
  • The content had to fit a classroom session, and teachers needed to coordinate learners using different devices.

Notes from the project.

  • Newton and the virtual lab explored two approaches to participation: asking questions within a lesson and manipulating the experiment directly.

With IRA VR, we had to think about the whole class. A learner might be inside a virtual environment, but the teacher still needed to choose the material, coordinate the session, and understand what happened afterwards.

I worked on both sides of that experience. The virtual content was the most visible part; the controls and reporting helped make it something a teacher could use as part of a lesson.
